As mentioned previously, there are those stones with naturally occurring color. The presence of nitrogen in the formation will often provide a strong yellow color and hence you will have yellow diamonds. If the gemstone has been effected by radiation, the gem may turn green.

For those with a smaller budget who would not ordinarily be able to afford a fancy gem, can now do so with treated diamonds which are a very attractive option. Gemologists have found ways to alter the colors of diamonds to get any shade or hue desired.. The grading process for colored diamonds is slightly different than that of the transparent diamond. First of all, a colored diamond is graded based on the primary hue, the blue or pink or red color that makes up the majority of the diamonds color. Secondly, they are graded based on the intensity of that color. A very intense, naturally colored diamond is more rare than a less intense diamond, and therefore more expensive. In almost every case, a natural stone will out grade an enhanced version.

Making Synthetic Diamonds

In general, most diamonds are found in the earth, in mines and extracted by miners , but more recently, scientists have come up with ways to create synthetic diamonds. A synthetic version is still a real diamond, just created in a lab instead of the earth, and, of course, are much less valuable.

Colored Diamond Names

Because fancy colored diamonds come in so many different shades, it can often be challenging to interpret the category of the diamonds color. Often, you'll find two colors labeling the shade of a diamond, such as greenish blue. Each diamond color name will have a primary color attached. In our example it would be blue. If another color is mentioned with an 'ish', that would be the secondary color. If you come upon a diamond labeled "brown red", then the diamond will have equal amounts of both colors seen through the stone.
